It is hopeless to figure out how to get from San Francisco to Tokyo on a 2D - flat - paper map. These cities seem to be in the western and the eastern “Ends of the world” respectively, and the conclusion is that you must cross the USA, the Atlantic and the European-Asian continent to get from one to the other. The map is a poor tool! In the same way, a flat color chart or fan deck does not give you knowledge of where each color “is” in relation to the others. In Kolormondo, the North Pole is white while the South Pole is black. Around the Equator, you find the most chromatic hues, those that constitute the color circle (first dimension = hue). The closer you go up to the North Pole the lighter they become, going south they darken (second dimension = value or lightness). Towards the globe’s core, colors become gradually less chromatic and eventually turn gray (third dimension = chroma). The gray scale is a column between the North and the South Pole.
